Hardness

Battle Ground water is very hard. Results from hardness tests range from 310 ppm to 350 ppm (ihtr confirmed by certified labs) as calcium carbonate (18 to 21 gpg). The hardness is fairly constant. It consists mostly of calcium and magnesium in a weight ratio of about 3 to 1. Not considered pathogenic, magnesium is a common ingredient in laxatives. People who are unaccustomed to it will experience temporary diarrhea. With continuous exposure, this diarrhea may last up to two weeks before the body adjusts.

Customers should consider private water softening for part of their water uses. Hardness will decrease the effectiveness of a hot water heater. Hardness will decrease the effectiveness of soap and detergent and shorten fabric life. Hardness will cause scaling of a humidifier. Back to Contents
